County trash service in Loft Ridge is every Wednesday morning (except Christmas). Your trash
and recycle bins should be placed out for pickup
no earlier than 7 pm Tuesday evening, and returned to your rear yard as
early as possible the same day as trash service.
Trash cans and bags must not weigh more than
50 pounds when full.
Mixing regular trash with bulk trash items
(when placed on the curb) may prevent either from being collected.
Items must
be placed in the open, and placed at least 20 feet from: parked vehicles,
low hanging trees, wires or any obstructions. Also, please do not obstruct
manhole covers, fire hydrants, storm drains, ditches, sidewalks or streets.
Loose trash items, whether intentional or a
result of nature, are less likely to be removed (trash collectors will not
chase down trash blowing around the neighborhood). PLEASE SECURE ALL TRASH
ITEMS SO THEY CANNOT BE BLOWN LOOSE!!!
New Recycling Guidelines!!!
Fairfax County Code
109.1-2-2 says the following items must be separated when left for
recycling:
container glass
metal food and beverage containers
plastic bottles and jugs
cardboard and mixed paper, including but not limited to corrugated
cardboard (that must be flattened), magazines,
newspaper, office
paper, and miscellaneous paper products.
Items that WILL NOT be picked up by trash collectors: dirt, construction
debris, concrete, drywall, ceiling or floor tiles, oversized brush (more
than six feet by six inches), any kind of glass material, animal waste,
anything containing gas or oil, paint, paint cans (even empty), tires,
propane, helium or air tanks, hazardous waste, furniture, bicycles, and
anything oversized that qualifies for bulk removal.
BULK TRASH
Household items too large for regular trash
pickup must be scheduled with Fairfax County's automated bulk pickup
scheduling number, at 703-802-3322, or you may schedule a pickup online.
Once the system has provided you with your scheduled pickup date, you should
place your item(s) out no earlier than Tuesday evening before that date.
Effective August 2005,
households are limited to four collections per year. Special collection
items should be placed within 6 feet of the curb (in a straight line) and
separated from regular trash. Acceptable bulk
items include furniture, mattresses, carpet and lumber. Bulk collection is
limited to 6 cubic yards (6 feet x 6 feet x six feet). Excess amounts may
require scheduling pickup through the Megabulk program.
If you observe materials being dumped in
Loft Ridge by contractors or homeowners, call 703-802-3322, TTY 711 and
report it. Also email or call management at 703-803-9641 to have it
removed. (Remember -- our dues pay for removal of improperly disposed
trash, so please report these violations so we can attempt to recover the
cost.)
MEGABULK
If you have more than four special collections
a year or the amount of debris is larger than 6 cubic yards, use the
Megabulk Program. The Fairfax County fee is $5 per cubic yard and $10 for
logs/wood over six inches. A Fairfax County representative will visit your
home and provide an estimate (they will never ask for cash -- payment is
accepted by credit card or check.) For more information about Megabulk,
call 703-802-3322.
RECYCLING
Recyclables should be placed in the blue
recycle bins and placed separately from the regular trash. If you are in
need of a recycling bin, contact the County at 703-802-3322 and they will
deliver your new bin during the next trash/recycling pick up day
(Wednesday). To help in keep track of your bin, consider adding your house
number to your bin in paint or permanent marker.
What items to recycle:
paperboard (cereal, shoe, tissue boxes), boxes (must be broken down),
newspapers, magazines, phone books, junk mail, flattened cardboard (no pizza
boxes), paper, plastic bottles (with necks smaller than the rest of the
container), glass bottles, aluminum and steel cans. Paper should be put in
paper grocery bags or in the recycle bin.
Preparing recyclables:
Rinse containers, remove and throw away lids and caps. Do not mix plastic,
metal and glass containers with paper and cardboard items. Cardboard that
does not fit in your recycling bin must be flattened and placed next to the
bin or the recycler people may not take it! Window glass is not accepted.
PLEASE SECURE ALL RECYCLE ITEMS SO THEY CANNOT BE BLOWN LOOSE!!!
YARD DEBRIS
Pickup of brush items also requires a quick
call to Fairfax County's automated bulk pickup scheduling number
703-802-3322, or you may schedule a pickup online.
Yard debris
you can leave for pickup: leaves, grass, plants, shrubs, prunings, twigs
and small branches under six inches in diameter. Yard debris must be
bundled, tied or contained in a reusable container or brown
paper yard waste bag; plastic bags should only be used as a last
option since they cause problems when these items are composted. Yard
debris must be placed
separately from regular trash during the spring/summer and fall seasons (4/1
- 12/24). During the winter season (12/25-3/31), leaves and grass trimmings
are not collected separately and can be included with your regular trash.
The best way to dispose of leaves and grass is to place them in a reusable
container or a brown paper bag. There is a special Christmas tree
collection announced every year by the county (dates will be published in
November & December.)

What yard debris not to
include:
poisonous plants, dirt, rocks, stones, concrete, sand, logs, large branches,
insect nests or hives. Do not put out bags or yard debris weighing more
than 50 pounds, and do not mix lumber with brush (lumber cannot be ground
into mulch.)
Hazardous Waste
The regular County trash service does
not collect hazardous waste.
To
dispose of these types of items, they must be taken to one of two County
waste facilities.
For more information on
hazardous waste collection,
visit the County's site.
